Are you being stalked by a tiger?
Asian Tiger mosquitoes have been found in various locations in Massachusetts (outside of Barnstable County). These mosquitoes are capable of carrying diseases such as Chikungunya and Dengue Fever. Please report any sightings to Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project at 508-775-1510 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Ask yourself these three questions:
- Are mosquitoes biting me in the middle of the day?
- Are the mosquitoes that bite me small, dark, with white markings?
- Do these mosquitoes focus on biting my legs?
If you answered “yes” to more than one of these questions, please report these mosquitoes to Cape Cod Mosquito Control at 508-775-1510 or email@example.com.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO REDUCE MOSQUITOES IN YOUR YARD?
Empty out water that is standing in containers! Mosquitoes develop in any standing water in your yard. So once a week, check your yard for containers holding water. Don’t forget to change the water in your bird bath and clean your gutters!
WHAT ABOUT REPELLENTS?
Read the label before purchasing a repellent! The repellent label should state that it is “for use against mosquitoes” and must have an EPA registration number. This number is your guarantee that the product is safe and effective if used FOLLOWING LABEL INSTRUCTIONS!
For more information on repellents, check out the Department of Public Health Fact Sheet found at http://www.mass.gov/eohhs/docs/dph/cdc/factsheets/m-o/mosquito-repellents.pdf.
WHAT WILL CAPE COD MOSQUITO CONTROL DO IF THEY COME TO MY PROPERTY?
The crew will check your property and the surrounding area for sites where mosquitoes are developing. When they find the mosquitoes, they will either recommend the water be removed (by emptying containers, opening a blocked drainage system, etc.) or they will apply a larvicide. Products we use contain the following active ingredients and are made to be used in the water, not sprayed in air: Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis, Bacillus sphaericus, and mineral oil. Labels and safety data sheets are available from our crews or by request 508-775-1510 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
WHAT DOES THIS SERVICE COST?
Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project is funded through your taxes, there is no additional charge.
WHAT ABOUT THOSE PRIVATE COMPANIES WHO ADVERTISE SPRAYING FOR MOSQUITO CONTROL?
The treatments offered by these companies are temporary. We recommend an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to mosquito control that begins with identifying the source of the mosquitoes and controlling them where they develop.
